How the application works
Choose the correct consulate (the main destination, or the first point of entry if the stay is split evenly), book an appointment, complete the form, pay the fee and give biometrics.
Applications for the Schengen area are usually submitted through an outsourced visa centre, not the embassy itself.
Documents that decide the outcome
Round-trip reservation, accommodation booking or a formal invitation, travel medical insurance, three to six months of bank statements, and proof of employment, studies or business activity at home.
Consistency matters more than volume: dates on the flights, hotel and insurance should match the itinerary you declared.
If you are refused
Refusals list a coded reason: insufficient means, unclear purpose, doubts about intention to return, or unreliable documents. Read it carefully.
You can appeal within the stated deadline or reapply with the specific weakness fixed. Reapplying with the identical file usually produces the identical answer.
If you are applying from Morocco, North Africa, Africa or the Middle East
- Applicants from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and much of the Middle East face higher scrutiny of financial means and ties to the home country — strong employment or study proof is the most effective evidence.
- A first short-stay visa is often issued for the exact dates of travel; consistent travel history usually leads to longer multi-entry visas later.
- Overstaying even by days can trigger a multi-year entry ban that affects every future application, including work and study visas.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I work or study on a tourist visa?
- No. Short-stay visas prohibit employment, and study is limited to very short courses where permitted.
- How much money should I show?
- Each country publishes a daily subsistence amount (often €40–€100 per day in Europe). Show that amount for the whole stay, plus a margin.
