Before you book
Check that your passport is valid at least six months beyond your return date and has two blank pages. Confirm whether your nationality needs a visa, an electronic travel authorisation or nothing at all.
The Schengen area is introducing an entry/exit system and a travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals; visa-required nationalities are unaffected but should still check the current rules before booking.
What border officers check
Purpose of travel, means of support, accommodation, a return or onward ticket, and travel medical insurance where required (€30,000 minimum coverage for Schengen).
Carry printed copies. Phone batteries die at the worst moments.
Health and money
Some destinations require yellow fever or other vaccination certificates depending on your route, not only your nationality.
Declare cash above the legal limit (€10,000 entering or leaving the EU). Bring a card that works internationally.

- Moroccan, Tunisian and Egyptian passport holders are visa-exempt for a growing list of destinations in Africa, Asia and Latin America — verify each one on the destination's official immigration site.
- Direct flights from Casablanca, Algiers, Tunis, Cairo, Dakar and Dubai make regional hubs the cheapest entry points into Europe and North America.
- Consular appointment waits in the region can be long; apply as early as the destination allows (typically up to six months before travel).
