The common pathways
Skilled/economic routes select on qualifications and labour-market need. Family routes depend on a spouse, parent or child who is already a resident or citizen. Study routes convert a diploma into a post-study work permit and then a work-based permit.
Investor and entrepreneur routes exist in most countries but carry high capital thresholds and heavy source-of-funds scrutiny.
From temporary to permanent
Permanent residence is normally granted after a continuous period of legal residence — often five years, sometimes three for high-skilled permits. Long absences can reset the clock.
Language tests and civic or integration exams are increasingly part of the permanent-residence stage rather than the initial visa.
Citizenship
Naturalisation typically follows permanent residence after a further qualifying period. Some countries require you to renounce your previous nationality; Morocco, for example, does not permit renunciation of Moroccan nationality in practice, so check both sides.
If you are applying from Morocco, North Africa, Africa or the Middle East
- Diaspora communities from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Nigeria and the Levant are well established in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Canada and the Gulf — family reunification is the single most used route.
- Documents from African and Middle Eastern civil registries often need apostille or consular legalisation; start with your local civil-status office.
- Never use an intermediary who promises a guaranteed visa or residence permit — no such guarantee exists in any official system.
Frequently asked questions
- Which route is fastest?
- Family reunification and points-based skilled routes are usually the fastest; investor routes are fast but expensive, and asylum is a separate legal process, not an immigration route.
- Does studying abroad lead to residence?
- Often yes. Many countries grant a post-study job-search permit of nine to twenty-four months that can convert into a work permit.
