Admission
Apply directly to universities or through national portals (Campus France, UCAS in the UK, Uni-Assist in Germany, national platforms in Italy and Spain). Deadlines run six to twelve months before the intake.
Expect transcripts, a recognised secondary or bachelor's diploma, a language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL, DELF/TCF, TestDaF), a motivation letter and references.
The student visa
Once admitted, the acceptance letter unlocks the visa application. You must prove tuition payment or exemption, sufficient living funds (a blocked account in Germany, a defined monthly amount elsewhere), accommodation and health insurance.
Most student visas allow part-time work — commonly 20 hours a week during term.
After graduation
Post-study permits let you stay and look for work: up to 18 months in Germany, two years in the UK, up to three years in Canada and Australia depending on the programme.
Time spent studying sometimes counts partially toward permanent residence — check the specific rule, as it varies widely.
If you are applying from Morocco, North Africa, Africa or the Middle East
- Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian baccalauréat holders have well-established recognition routes into France, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Canada, often through Campus France or equivalent offices in their country.
- Public universities in Germany, Norway and much of France charge low or no tuition — living costs, not tuition, are the main budget line.
- Proof of funds is the most common refusal point in the region; use accounts in your own or a direct sponsor's name with a clear, documented history.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to speak the local language?
- Not always — many programmes are taught in English or French. But local-language ability strongly improves part-time work and post-study employment.
- Can I bring my spouse?
- Usually at master's or doctoral level, subject to proof of extra funds and accommodation.
