Norway's immigration system is straightforward but strict on documentation and income. Most routes require a specific purpose, sufficient funds and, for work permits, a qualifying job offer or skill level.
Skilled worker permit
The skilled worker permit is for people with a job offer that requires completed vocational training, a university degree or special qualifications. The salary and working conditions must be at least as good as those in a Norwegian collective agreement or industry standard.
Job seeker permit
A job seeker permit allows qualified people to enter Norway to look for skilled work. It is usually based on education or experience and is granted for a limited period. You cannot take unskilled work on this permit.
Self-employed and entrepreneurs
Self-employed people can apply if they can document a viable business plan, sufficient funds and relevant experience. The business must be expected to generate enough income to support the applicant in Norway.
Student and family immigration
Student permits require admission to an approved educational institution and proof that you can cover living costs, either through savings, a part-time job within permitted hours or a scholarship. Family immigration allows certain permit holders to bring a spouse, cohabiting partner or children.
Income and accommodation requirements

Common mistakes to avoid
Accepting a job offer below the skilled-worker salary threshold, working more hours than a student permit allows, or failing to register with the police within the deadline can put your permit at risk.
